Fairtrade

What is Fairtrade?

For a product to be certified and labelled as Fairtrade, the company must:

Pay a price to producers that covers the costs of sustainable production and living
Pay a 'premium' that producers can invest in development
Make partial advance payments when requested by producers
Sign contracts that allow for long term planning and sustainable production practices

For small independent farmers working on their own land the most important aspect of fair trade is that they are paid a reasonable price for their produce.

For larger producers, the most important aspect of fair trade is that employees are being pair fairly and are working under suitable conditions.

What products can I purchase under the Fairtrade agreement?

Cocoa, coffee, cotton, rice, spices, sugar, tea & sports balls
